Correspondence on Indian affairs : manuscript, 1782-1800.

Consists of correspondence between Dundas and various British military commanders in India including Sir Robert Abercromby, a major-general, governor at Bombay, (1790- ) and commander-in-chief of the forces in India (1793-1797), Patrick Ross, a major-general and chief engineer at Madras (1770- ), and Robert Stuart, a major-general at Futtyghur. Ross's papers include designs and plans for defenses. Also contains correspondence with Sir John Shore, governor-general in India, Sir Alured Clarke (1745?-1832), Sir James Henry Craig (1748-1812), Sir John Murray (1768?-1827), Sir Charles Warre Malet (1752-1815), and others.

Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville (1742-1811), statesman, was the father of Robert Saunders Dundas, the second Viscount Melville (1771-1851), also a statesman. Henry Dundas was educated at Edinburgh High School and University, before becoming solicitor-general for Scotland in 1766.
